Adenitis

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Adenitis

Adenitis is the inflammation and swelling of the lymph nodes, which are a part of the body's immune system, due to bacterial, viral, or fungal infections. It mostly manifests as painful, tender, and red swellings in the neck, armpit, and groin regions. A quick recovery is achieved with appropriate antibiotic or antiviral treatments based on the type of the underlying infection.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the condition under the headings below.
What is Adenitis?
It is the inflammation and enlargement in size of the lymph nodes (glands) in the body due to bacterial, viral, or fungal infections.
What Causes It?
It generally develops as a result of the lymph nodes fighting the relevant microbe following throat infections, tooth decay, skin wounds, or viral diseases.
What are the Symptoms?
Swelling in the neck, armpit, or groin area, pain felt upon touching, sometimes skin redness, fever, and general fatigue are the most common findings.
What is the Difference Between Adenitis and Lymphoma?
Adenitis is infection-related, painful, and grows rapidly. Lymphoma (cancer) swellings are generally painless, grow slowly, and do not respond to antibiotic treatment.
How is it Diagnosed?
It is diagnosed through a physical examination, blood tests, and investigation of the source of the infection. In suspicious cases, an ultrasound or fine needle biopsy may be performed.
How is it Treated?
Antibiotic or antiviral medications targeting the agent causing the inflammation are used. If an abscess has formed, it may need to be surgically drained.
