Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is an aggressive type of leukemia where immature lymphocyte (white blood) cells in the bone marrow multiply uncontrollably, suppressing healthy blood production. It is more common in childhood. In our Hematology and Oncology clinic, current chemotherapy protocols, targeted drugs, and bone marrow transplant methods are successfully applied.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the condition under the headings below.
What is Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)?

It is the cancerous transformation of the precursors (lymphoblasts) of cells called lymphocytes, which are responsible for the body's defense, in the bone marrow, leaving no room for other healthy blood cells.

What Does Acute Mean?

The word 'acute' indicates that the disease has a very rapid and aggressive course, and if left without intervention, it will pose a life-threatening risk in a short time.

What are the Symptoms?

Due to the decrease in healthy blood cells; profound fatigue (anemia), frequent recurrent infections/fever, easy bruising on the skin, bleeding gums, and bone/joint pain are observed.

Who is Most Affected?

ALL is the most common type of childhood leukemia (especially between the ages of 2-5). However, it can also occur in adults and the elderly at lower rates.

How is it Diagnosed?

Following abnormalities in the complete blood count and peripheral smear tests, a definitive diagnosis is made by looking at the ratio of leukemia cells (blasts) through a 'Bone Marrow Biopsy'.

How is it Treated?

Treatment usually consists of intensive chemotherapy regimens comprising induction (putting the disease to sleep) and maintenance (consolidation) phases. When necessary, healing is achieved by performing a bone marrow (stem cell) transplant from a suitable donor.
