Atypical Psychosis

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Atypical Psychosis

Atypical psychosis is a psychotic condition that does not fully fit into specific and well-defined psychiatric diagnostic categories like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, but progresses with delusions and hallucinations that distort the person's perception of reality. In our Psychiatry clinic, the clinical features of each patient are examined in detail; personalized treatment plans are created with antipsychotic medications, psychotherapy, and social rehabilitation programs.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the condition under the headings below.
What is Atypical Psychosis?

It is a psychiatric diagnosis where the person's ability to evaluate reality is impaired (experiencing hallucinations and delusions) but the symptoms do not fully meet all the diagnostic criteria of standard psychotic diseases (e.g., schizophrenia).

What is the Difference from Schizophrenia?

In schizophrenia, the disease picture is usually long-term and has its own chronic symptoms. Atypical psychosis, on the other hand, progresses with different symptom combinations and can sometimes show a short-term or fluctuating course.

What are the Symptoms?

Hearing voices or seeing images that are not there (hallucinations), irrational and unchangeable false beliefs (delusions), disorganized speech, suspiciousness, and social isolation.

What Causes It?

It is thought that severe stress factors, genetic predisposition, dopamine imbalances in the brain, severe traumas, or substance use can trigger this condition.

How is it Diagnosed?

It is diagnosed through a detailed clinical interview by a psychiatrist and the patient's medical history. An EEG or brain MRI may be requested to rule out neurological diseases that could cause the symptoms.

How is it Treated?

New-generation antipsychotic medications that help balance brain chemistry are the foundation of treatment. With individual psychotherapy applied alongside medication, the patient's social adaptation and perception of reality are strengthened.
