Atrial Fibrillation

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common heart rhythm disorder, characterized by the irregular quivering of the heart's upper chambers (atria) instead of a regular beat. This irregularity paves the way for blood to pool in the heart and form clots, significantly increasing the risk of stroke. In our Cardiology clinic, it is successfully managed with blood-thinning treatments, rhythm-regulating medications, and radiofrequency ablation methods.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the disease under the headings below.

Due to a disruption in the heart's electrical system, it is a condition where the upper chambers (atria) cannot contract normally and rhythmically, but instead quiver irregularly and very rapidly.

Because the atria cannot fully contract, blood pools here and clots. If this formed blood clot travels to the vessels going from the heart to the brain, it can cause a blockage, leading to a stroke.

While some patients feel no symptoms at all; heart palpitations like a fluttering bird's wing, shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, chest discomfort, and dizziness are commonly observed.

Advanced age, high blood pressure, heart valve diseases, heart failure, an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), and excessive alcohol consumption are the most common causes.

After listening to the patient's complaints, irregular heartbeats are easily detected with an electrocardiography (ECG) or a rhythm holter monitor (24-hour ECG recording).

Anticoagulant (blood-thinning) medications are essential to prevent stroke risk. To ensure a rhythmic beat, rhythm-regulating medications, electrical shock (cardioversion), or an ablation procedure where problematic tissue is destroyed by entering through the groin are applied.
