Ichthyosis Vulgaris (Fish Scale Disease)

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Ichthyosis Vulgaris

Ichthyosis Vulgaris (Fish Scale Disease) is a genetic skin disease where dead skin cells cannot shed normally and form thick, dry, fish-scale-like layers on the surface. It typically worsens in cold and dry weather. In our Dermatology clinic, symptoms are brought under control with medical creams that intensively moisturize the skin and provide an exfoliating (keratolytic) effect.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is Ichthyosis Vulgaris (Fish Scale Disease)?

It is the accumulation and scaling of dead cells on the skin surface due to the slowing down of the shedding process of cells in the uppermost layer of the skin.

Why Does It Occur?

It occurs as a result of an inherited mutation in the gene encoding the protein called filaggrin, which forms the skin's moisture barrier.

What Are the Symptoms?

Extreme skin dryness, thin white/gray scaling, and thickening of the skin, especially on the lower parts of the legs and arms. The face and inside of the joints are generally not affected.

Is It Contagious?

Since it is a purely genetic condition, it is absolutely not contagious. It is not transmitted from person to person through contact.

Is There a Cure?

There is no genetic cure that completely eliminates the disease. Keeping the skin constantly moisturized is the foundation of treatment.

How is it Managed?

Special moisturizers and keratolytic creams containing urea, salicylic acid, or lactic acid soften the skin by allowing the dead skin to peel off.
