Bunion (Hallux Valgus)

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Bunion

Hallux Valgus is the outward turning (towards the other toes) of the big toe and the formation of a painful bony bump (bunion) at the base of the toe. Genetic predisposition and the use of narrow-toed shoes trigger the disease. In our Orthopedics outpatient clinics, while the progression is slowed down with toe separators in mild cases, permanent aesthetic and functional solutions are provided with bone-correcting (osteotomy) surgeries in painful and advanced stage deformities.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is Hallux Valgus?

It is the disruption of the alignment of the big toe joint, causing the big toe to bend towards the other toes and forming a bony bump on the inner edge of the foot.

Is It Only Caused by Wrong Shoes?

Tight, pointed-toe, and high-heeled shoes accelerate and worsen the condition. However, the main cause is usually structural defects such as genetic predisposition from the family and flat feet.

What Are the Symptoms?

Redness and swelling at the base of the big toe, severe pain due to friction when wearing shoes, and the overlapping of the other toes.

Can It Be Corrected Without Surgery?

Once the bone structure is distorted, no device (night splint, toe separator) can return the bone to its former straight state. These only relieve pain and slow down the process.

When is Surgery Necessary?

Surgery is preferred when wearing everyday shoes becomes impossible and the pain starts to disrupt the patient's quality of life and walking balance.

How is the Surgery Performed?

Simply shaving the bump is not enough. The bone is cut and brought into the correct alignment with a procedure called osteotomy, and it is fixed with titanium screws.
