General Information About Nasal Congestion in Babies
Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions
Because babies' nasal passages are very narrow, even a slight mucus accumulation or a small swelling (edema) in the mucosa can easily block the airway.
For the first 6 months, babies anatomically breathe only through their noses. If the nose is blocked, they stop nursing, become restless, and their night sleep is frequently interrupted.
Simple cold viruses, excessively dry room air, milk allergies, or rarely, enlarged adenoids cause nasal congestion.
Isotonic saline (saltwater) drops obtained from pharmacies are dropped into the nostrils to soften dried mucus, which is then gently extracted using special baby nasal aspirators.
Creams with menthol or eucalyptus, or chemical decongestant sprays, must absolutely not be used in babies under 2 years of age as they can cause respiratory arrest (spasm).
If the baby completely refuses to feed due to congestion, if it is accompanied by fever, or if the spaces between their ribs noticeably sink in while breathing, a doctor should be consulted urgently.
