General Information About Encephalitis
Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions
It is the inflammation, swelling, and loss of function of the brain cells (parenchyma) directly due to infectious agents or an error in the immune system.
Meningitis is the inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain. Encephalitis is the inflammation of the brain's own inner tissue directly. Sometimes both can be seen together (Meningoencephalitis).
The most common cause is the Herpes Simplex virus. In addition, viruses transmitted by tick or mosquito bites, measles, mumps viruses, or the immune system attacking its own brain (autoimmune encephalitis) are among the causes.
Severe headache, high fever, stiff neck, behavioral changes, hallucinations, confusion, tendency to sleep, paralysis-like weakness, and epileptic seizures.
A definitive diagnosis is made through Brain MRI imaging, electroencephalography (EEG), and most importantly, by obtaining fluid from the lower back (Lumbar Puncture) and analyzing the cerebrospinal fluid in a laboratory.
It is a vital emergency. The patient is taken to intensive care, and high-dose intravenous antiviral drugs directed at the virus (Acyclovir, etc.), anti-seizure medications, and cortisone treatments to suppress brain edema are administered.
