It is the condition where the blood vessels carrying oxygen to the brain are suddenly blocked, resulting in a lack of blood supply to the brain region fed by that vessel and the death of cells (infarction). It accounts for 85% of all strokes.
A clot can form from the rupture of cholesterol plaques inside the carotid arteries in the neck. Additionally, a clot formed in the heart due to cardiac rhythm disorders (Atrial Fibrillation) can be pumped to the brain via the bloodstream.
Approximately 2 million brain cells die every minute from the moment the vessel is blocked. The earlier medical intervention is provided (especially within the first 4.5 hours), the lower the patient's risk of permanent paralysis.
In cases of drooping/sagging on one side of the face, inability to hold one of the arms or legs in the air, or sudden slurring/impairment of speech, the 112 Emergency service should be called without delay.
With Diffusion MRI and CT Angiography imaging performed immediately after a neurological examination in the emergency room, the blocked vessel and damaged brain tissue are detected within seconds.
Patients who present within the first 4.5 hours and have no risk of bleeding are given intravenous clot-dissolving (thrombolytic) drugs. In major main artery occlusions, the clot is extracted from the brain using special devices through an angiographic method entering from the groin (Thrombectomy).
