Kidney Enlargement (Hydronephrosis)

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Kidney Enlargement

Kidney enlargement (Hydronephrosis) is the condition where urine produced in the kidneys cannot flow into the bladder due to an obstruction in the urinary tract (stone, tumor, prostate, etc.) and accumulates in the kidney, expanding (swelling) the organ. If left untreated, it can cause permanent damage to the kidney tissue. In our Urology clinic, the problem is quickly resolved with endoscopic, laser, or stent (catheter) applications directed at the cause of the obstruction.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is Kidney Enlargement (Hydronephrosis)?

It is the condition of the kidney stretching and swelling like a balloon filled with water as a result of urine being unable to travel down the urinary tract (ureter) and accumulating in the renal pelvis.

Why Does It Occur?

The most common cause is kidney stones falling into the urinary tract. In addition, prostate enlargement, uterine pressure during pregnancy, urinary tract strictures, and tumors can obstruct urine flow and lead to this condition.

What Are the Symptoms?

A feeling of fullness in the back or sides, severe kidney pain (colic), nausea, difficulty urinating, and a high fever when an infection is added.

Does It Cause Permanent Damage to the Kidney?

Yes. If urine cannot empty for a long time, the high pressure inside the kidney impairs blood flow and can cause the kidney tissue to slowly die (permanent kidney failure).

How is it Diagnosed?

Urinary Ultrasonography is the most reliable and harmless initial examination that shows the swelling (dilation) in the kidney within seconds. In necessary cases, a contrast-enhanced CT scan may be requested.

How is it Treated?

The priority is to drain the accumulated urine. If there is a ureteral stone, it is removed endoscopically by breaking it. In emergency situations, a thin tube called a 'Double J Stent' is inserted into the kidney duct to ensure urine flow.
