General Information About Borderline Personality Disorder
Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions
It is a mental disorder in which an individual's sense of identity, mood, and relationships with their environment are in a constant state of instability, and they experience profound difficulties in managing their emotions.
Interpersonal relationships are very intense, fast, and stormy. While they may glorify their partner as the 'most perfect person in the world' one moment, at the slightest mistake or feeling of abandonment, they can suddenly declare them the 'most worthless person' and hate them.
Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment, chronic feelings of emptiness, self-harming behaviors (cutting, etc.), suicide threats, and impulsive acts like excessive spending/reckless driving.
Besides genetic transmission; physical or sexual abuse during childhood, parental neglect, early loss of a parent, or severe traumas are the biggest triggers of the disease.
It is diagnosed by mental health professionals through a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, based on the patient's clinical history and DSM-5 diagnostic criteria (presence of at least 5 criteria).
The backbone of treatment is psychotherapy, not medications. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which teaches the patient to recognize their emotions and cope with moments of crisis, is the most successful method. Antidepressants can also be used to alleviate episodes.
