Bronchiolitis

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Bronchiolitis

Bronchiolitis is the condition where the smallest air-carrying tubes in the lungs (bronchioles) become inflamed, filled with mucus, and blocked due to a viral invasion. It occurs mainly in outbreaks during the winter and early spring months, particularly in babies under 2 years of age. It causes wheezing and feeding difficulties. In babies evaluated with clinical findings by our Pediatrics specialists, it is alleviated with humidified air and medical support to relax the airways.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the disease under the headings below.

It is the inflammation, swelling, and narrowing due to fluid accumulation of the narrow, developing lung channels (bronchioles) in children as a result of a viral infection.

Bronchitis is the inflammation of the larger main airways and can be seen at any age. Bronchiolitis is the inflammation of the tiny air channels at the very ends of the lungs and, due to its anatomical structure, is seen only during infancy.

The vast majority of cases are caused by a very common winter virus called RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus). Rhinoviruses (colds) and adenoviruses can also lead to the disease.

The disease starts with a simple runny nose and a mild fever. Within 2-3 days, the cough worsens, a fine whistling sound (wheezing) comes from the chest when the baby exhales, and rapid breathing begins.

If the baby is breathing very fast and their ribs are sinking in while breathing, if there is blueness (cyanosis) on the lips or fingertips, and if they have completely refused to feed, emergency medical intervention is required.

Since it is viral, antibiotics are of no use and are not prescribed. Treatment is entirely supportive. In mild cases, nasal clearing and frequent breastfeeding are sufficient; babies with respiratory distress are given oxygen and intravenous fluid (serum) support in the hospital.
