It is a rare disease characterized by asthma and high levels of eosinophils (a type of white blood cell), where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks blood vessels, leading to inflammation.
Symptoms include severe asthma attacks lasting for years, nasal polyps, sinusitis, joint pain, skin rashes, and loss of sensation (neuropathy) in the hands and feet.
The exact cause is unknown. It is believed that allergens or infections overstimulate the immune system in individuals with a genetic predisposition, triggering this condition.
The respiratory tract is the most commonly affected area. In advanced stages, it can cause damage to the heart (myocarditis), kidneys, gastrointestinal system, and peripheral nerves.
It is suspected through extremely high levels of eosinophil cells and positivity for p-ANCA antibodies in blood tests. A definitive diagnosis is made by taking a biopsy from the affected tissue (skin or lungs).
High-dose cortisone (steroids) is used to stop the progression of the disease. In advanced cases with organ involvement, strong immunosuppressive drugs are added to the treatment regimen.
