Obesity in Children

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity is a condition characterized by fat accumulation significantly above the healthy limits determined by a child's age, height, and growth percentiles. As a result of poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle, this condition paves the way for early-onset Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and fatty liver disease. Through the joint follow-up of our Pediatrics, Endocrinology, and Nutrition departments, healthy lifestyle habits are instilled without stunting the child's growth.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can access detailed information about the disease under the headings below.

It is the condition where, due to excessive fat accumulation in the body, the child's Body Mass Index (BMI) is higher than 95% of children of the same age and sex.

The excessive consumption of ready-to-eat, processed, and high-sugar foods (fast food, packaged snacks) and the increase in sedentary hours spent in front of screens (tablets/phones) are the main reasons.

Children with a family history of obesity have a higher predisposition; however, unless combined with poor nutrition and physical inactivity, this predisposition alone does not lead to obesity. Rarely, hormonal disorders can also be a cause.

Obese children are prime candidates for becoming obese adults. They face very high risks of experiencing early-onset insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, joint problems, and psychological issues (peer bullying/depression).

A pediatrician evaluates the child's percentile (growth) curves. Blood tests are requested to check for hormonal imbalances (thyroid, insulin, liver enzymes) that may cause or result from obesity.

Because they are in their developmental stage, children are not given severe diets or adult weight-loss medications. The foundation of treatment involves adopting a healthy diet (eliminating sugar/packaged foods) for the entire family and encouraging the child toward physical activities (sports) they will enjoy.
