It is the disruption of the integrity of any of the three main bones forming the elbow joint (lower end of the humerus, head of the radius, or the olecranon process of the ulna) by a mechanical force.
In children, it usually occurs as a result of falling onto an outstretched hand during play. In adults, it is caused by high-energy traumas such as falling from a height, sports injuries, and traffic accidents.
A cracking sound heard at the moment of the break, massive swelling (edema) developing in the elbow within seconds, bruising, inability to bend or straighten the elbow, and extremely severe pain radiating down the arm.
Yes. Very important arteries and nerves (ulnar and median nerves) pass around the elbow to the arm and hand. If sharp bone ends damage these structures, numbness and circulatory issues in the hand may occur.
Following a physical examination, the fracture line and the degree of displacement are determined with X-rays taken from two angles. In comminuted (fragmented) fractures or those involving the joint surface, a Computed Tomography (CT) scan is requested for detailed planning.
If the alignment of the bones is intact (non-displaced fracture), the arm is immobilized in a special cast or splint for 4-6 weeks. For fragmented fractures, those disrupting the joint surface, or displaced fractures, surgical intervention is mandatory; the bones are internally fixed with titanium plates, screws, or wires.
