Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Bruxism

Teeth grinding (Bruxism) is the condition of unconsciously rubbing or clenching the teeth together with great force, mostly during sleep. Stress, anxiety, or misaligned bites are the primary causes. It manifests with tooth enamel wear, pain in the jaw joint, and morning headaches. In our outpatient clinics, it is treated with the use of an occlusal splint (night guard) and botox injections into the chewing muscles.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can access detailed information about the disease under the headings below.

It is the habit of involuntarily contracting the chewing muscles, pressing, and grinding the teeth together with excessive force while awake or asleep.

Intense stress, anger, and anxiety in daily life are the most common psychological causes. In addition, bite (occlusion) disorders in the teeth, sleep apnea, and excessive caffeine consumption are physiological triggers.

It leads to the flattening and cracking of the tooth enamel, shortening of the teeth, cold sensitivity, deterioration of the jaw joint (TMJ), and the masseter muscle enlarging, making the face shape appear squarer.

Yes. The jaw and temple muscles, which contract continuously throughout the night, build up lactic acid. This causes severe muscle pain in the face, temples, and neck area upon waking up in the morning.

The dentist observes the flattening and wear facets on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Additionally, significant tenderness and enlargement are detected when the patient's jaw muscles are palpated.

To protect the teeth from wear and relax the joint, a transparent 'Night Guard' (occlusal splint) custom-fitted to the patient's teeth is prepared. 'Botox' injections applied to the masseter muscles to stop the excessive contraction are the most effective and current treatment method.
