Premature Ejaculation

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation is the reflex of the male ejaculating within a very short period during sexual intercourse involuntarily, before he or his partner is satisfied. It often stems from psychological factors like performance anxiety or neurobiological sensitivities. In our Urology clinic, successful results are achieved with local anesthetic creams, oral medications, and behavioral therapies.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can access detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is Premature Ejaculation?

It is the condition during sexual intercourse where the male is unable to control ejaculation and ejaculates just before or shortly after vaginal penetration (usually in less than 2 minutes).

What is the Difference Between Primary and Secondary (Acquired)?

A condition that has existed lifelong since the first sexual experience is called Primary; a condition that develops later after a period of normal functioning, usually due to stress, is called Secondary (acquired) premature ejaculation.

What Causes It?

Hasty masturbation habits acquired at an early age, performance anxiety (fear of failure), prostate diseases, sensitivity in serotonin receptors, and relationship problems are the main causes.

Is It a Psychological Problem?

It largely stems from a psychological root (stress, anxiety). However, there are also entirely physiological reasons, such as extreme neural sensitivity at the head of the penis and genetic hormonal predisposition.

How is it Diagnosed?

No blood test is needed. It is sufficient for the diagnosis that the urologist listens to the patient's sexual history in detail and evaluates the ejaculation time and the individual's ability to control it.

How is it Treated?

It is treated very successfully with delaying (local anesthetic) creams that reduce the sensitivity of the glans penis, antidepressant group (SSRI) pills that suppress the ejaculation reflex, and sexual therapy (the Stop-Start technique) that teaches how to control the urge to ejaculate.
