General Information About Fibromyalgia
Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions
It is the production of severe and widespread muscle pain due to a disruption in the way the brain perceives pain signals, despite there being no inflammation, damage, or rheumatic disorder in the body.
Persistent widespread body pain, severe morning fatigue (unrefreshing sleep), brain fog (focus and memory issues), irritable bowel syndrome, and morning stiffness in the joints.
Although it was entirely thought to be psychological in the past, today it has been proven to be a neurochemical dysfunction of the brain. However, intense stress, trauma, or depression can directly trigger and exacerbate this disease.
These are specific areas of sensitivity on the patient's body (around the neck, shoulders, chest, hips, and knees) where pain and discomfort are felt much more intensely than normal, even when light pressure is applied.
There is no blood or imaging test that shows fibromyalgia. Diagnosis is made by ruling out rheumatic diseases and the patient's symptoms persisting for more than 3 months.
Classic painkillers do not work. Treatment involves low-dose antidepressants that calm the nervous system, pain modulators like pregabalin, and the best medicine for the disease: regular aerobic exercise (swimming/walking).
