General Information About Leaky Gut Syndrome
Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions
It is the condition where the small intestinal wall, which normally only allows digested nutrients to pass into the blood, loses its filtering ability and permits harmful substances to leak into the bloodstream.
The overuse of antibiotics and painkillers (NSAIDs), a diet high in processed and sugary foods, heavy alcohol consumption, chronic stress, and the disruption of the intestinal flora (beneficial bacteria) are the most fundamental causes.
Along with gastrointestinal issues (bloating, gas, diarrhea), chronic fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, skin rashes, and unexplained lowered immunity are observed.
The immune system goes on high alert when it detects undigested foreign proteins leaking into the blood. This constant state of war can set the stage for the immune system to mistakenly attack its own body (like the thyroid or joints), leading to conditions such as Hashimoto's or rheumatism.
There is no single, definitive standard test. The patient's symptoms are evaluated. If necessary, blood levels of the 'Zonulin' protein or special urine tests (Lactulose/Mannitol) that measure intestinal permeability may be requested.
The foundation of treatment is not medication, but diet and the repair of the intestinal lining. Gluten, refined sugar, and processed foods are removed from the diet. The intestinal flora is rebuilt using bone broth, probiotics, L-glutamine, and zinc supplements.
