Impotence (Erectile Dysfunction)

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Impotence

Impotence (Erectile Dysfunction) is the inability of a man to achieve or maintain sufficient penile hardness (erection) to initiate or sustain sexual intercourse. In addition to psychological factors, it can occur physically due to diabetes, vascular occlusions, or neurological diseases. In our Urology clinic, successful solutions are offered with medication, injections, shock wave (ESWT), or penile prosthesis (implants) treatments.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can access detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is Impotence (Erectile Dysfunction)?

It is the inability of the male sexual organ to achieve the necessary hardness for satisfying sexual intercourse by failing to provide adequate blood flow despite sexual stimulation, or losing hardness in a short time.

Is It Physical or Psychological?

It can be both. Erection problems that start suddenly and vary depending on the situation generally stem from psychological causes like stress, depression, or performance anxiety. Problems that develop slowly and are continuous are of physical origin.

What Physical Diseases Trigger It?

Diabetes, which clogs capillaries, hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity, testosterone deficiency, and nerve damage during prostate surgeries are the most common physiological causes.

How is it Diagnosed?

The urologist requests hormone tests (Testosterone, Prolactin, etc.) and a blood sugar measurement to find the underlying disease. A Color Penile Doppler Ultrasonography is performed to examine the blood flow to the penis and vascular health in detail.

Is Medication Treatment Sufficient?

For most patients, PDE5 inhibitor (sildenafil, etc.) pills, which increase blood flow to the penis, provide successful results. For patients who do not respond to medications, local injections given directly into the penis using fine needles are applied.

What is the Permanent Surgical Treatment Like?

For patients who do not benefit from medications and ESWT (shock wave) therapies, or whose nerves or vessels are completely destroyed, a Penile Prosthesis (Implant) is surgically placed. Thanks to their externally invisible mechanisms, these prostheses offer the patient 100% successful erections for life.
