General Information About Insulin Resistance
Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions
It is the condition where the cells' doors are closed to the insulin hormone, resulting in the sugar in the blood being unable to enter the cells to be used as energy, thus starting to accumulate in the blood.
Excess weight (especially abdominal fat), a sedentary lifestyle, and a diet high in refined sugar and carbohydrates disrupt insulin receptors and trigger resistance.
Sudden sleepiness after meals (especially carbohydrates), a constant desire (craving) to eat sweets, difficulty losing weight, thickening around the waist, and chronic fatigue.
Excessively elevated insulin levels in the blood cause abnormal proliferation of skin cells, creating dark brown/black patches that look like dirt on the back of the neck, armpits, and groin.
It is diagnosed using a mathematical formula called the HOMA-IR index (over 2.5 indicates resistance), based on Fasting Blood Sugar and Fasting Insulin levels taken from blood on an empty stomach in the morning.
It requires lifestyle changes rather than medication. A low glycemic index diet where simple sugars are cut out, regular exercise (muscles burn sugar without insulin), and weight loss completely break the resistance. If necessary, drugs like metformin are given as support.
