General Information About Urinary Incontinence in Women
Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions
It is the involuntary leakage or emptying of urine due to the loss of control over the bladder muscles or the valves (sphincters) that retain urine.
It is the condition where a few drops of urine leak due to a sudden increase in intra-abdominal pressure during laughing, coughing, sneezing, jumping, or heavy lifting. It is the most common type.
It is the complete leakage of urine accompanied by an intense urge to urinate before the person can reach the toilet, due to sudden and involuntary contraction of the bladder muscles (Overactive Bladder).
Having multiple or difficult vaginal (normal) deliveries, tissues weakening due to decreasing estrogen hormone with menopause, extreme obesity, and aging relax the pelvic floor muscles and cause this condition.
After a pelvic examination by a Urology or Gynecology physician, an 'Urodynamics Test', which clearly shows the capacity of the bladder and contraction disorders, is performed to determine the type of leakage.
Mild cases are treated with Kegel exercises and medications. In the TOT/TVT (Sling Surgery) method applied for severe stress incontinence, a synthetic tape/hammock is placed under the sagging urinary tube (urethra) to support the urinary tract; the patient is discharged on the same day.
