It is the wearing away and disappearance of the cartilage lining that provides smooth gliding of the hip joint, causing the underlying bones to rub against each other and deform, leading to joint locking.
The pain is usually felt not in the hip but deep in the groin and radiates toward the knee. There is stiffness in the joint in the mornings, inability to bend over to the foot while putting on socks/shoes, and a gradually shortening walking distance.
