General Information About Heart Muscle Inflammation
Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions
It is the weakening of the heart muscle (myocardium) due to inflammation and the subsequent decrease in its blood-pumping ability.
The most common cause is viral infections such as the flu, Covid-19, or adenovirus. Rarely, toxins or autoimmune reactions can also cause it.
Severe chest pain resembling a heart attack, shortness of breath, palpitations, extreme fatigue, and fluid accumulation in the legs (edema).
While mild cases recover completely, severe inflammation can cause permanent weakness in the heart muscle (heart failure) or rhythm disorders.
Elevated levels of heart enzymes (Troponin) are detected in blood tests. ECG, Echocardiography, and Cardiac MR are used for definitive diagnosis.
The patient is hospitalized and rested. Blood pressure/rhythm medications that reduce the heart's workload and diuretic (fluid-removing) treatments are administered.
