General Information About Anemia
Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions
It is the decrease in the volume of healthy red blood cells (erythrocytes) or the amount of hemoglobin that carry enough oxygen to the body's organs.
Iron Deficiency Anemia is the most common type. Malnutrition, absorption problems from the intestines, menstrual bleeding in women, or hidden bleeding from stomach/intestinal ulcers lead to this.
Chronic fatigue, paleness in the skin and inside the lips, palpitations increasing with exertion, shortness of breath, dizziness, feeling cold, and hair loss.
In the deficiency of vitamin B12, which is essential for DNA synthesis, it is a type of anemia where red blood cells are produced larger than normal (macrocytic) but are dysfunctional, and it also causes neurological symptoms like numbness.
Hemoglobin and hematocrit values are checked with a simple Complete Blood Count (Hemogram). To find the type of deficiency, Ferritin, B12, and Folic acid levels are measured.
If there is blood loss, the source of bleeding (e.g., stomach ulcer) is treated first. Then, iron stores are replenished by giving iron pills or intravenously (serum), B12 injections, or vitamin supplements.
