Jock Itch (Tinea Cruris)

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Jock Itch

Jock itch is an itchy, red, and ring-shaped rash caused by dermatophyte-type fungi multiplying in warm and humid environments in the groin, inner thigh, and buttocks. It is especially exacerbated by sweating and wearing tight clothing. It is diagnosed through clinical examination in our Dermatology polyclinics and treated with topical or systemic antifungal agents.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can access detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is Jock Itch?

It is a superficial skin infection caused by dermatophyte-type fungi settling in the top layer of the skin, forming in the inner thighs, groin folds, and buttock area.

Why Does It Occur and What are the Triggers?

Fungi love dark, warm, and humid environments. Excessive sweating, wearing tight and synthetic underwear, staying in wet swimwear for long periods, or transmitting foot fungus to the groin via a towel are the most common causes.

What are the Symptoms?

These are half-moon or ring-shaped lesions in the groin area with distinct red borders, a paler center, that are scaly and itch very intensely.

Is It Contagious?

Yes. It can be transmitted to other people through an infected person's shared items (towels, underwear, bedsheets) or through direct skin contact (including sexual intercourse).

How is it Diagnosed?

The typical clinical picture observed by a dermatologist is sufficient for diagnosis. In cases of doubt, a small scraping taken from the lesion is examined under a microscope (KOH preparation) to reveal fungal hyphae.

How is it Treated?

It is essential to keep the area dry and clean. Antifungal creams (terbinafine, clotrimazole, etc.) that kill fungal cells are applied to the lesion area for a few weeks. In stubborn and widespread cases, oral antifungal pills are prescribed.
