The diagnosis is made by directly observing the clouded and discolored lens during a detailed eye examination performed by an ophthalmologist using a biomicroscope.
It is performed with drop anesthesia (numbing the eye). The eye is entered through a very small incision, the clouded lens is fragmented with ultrasound waves (PHACO) and suctioned out. A clear, artificial lens (smart lenses, etc.) that will remain for life is placed in its stead, and the patient returns home the same day.
