Laryngitis

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Laryngitis

Laryngitis is the inflammation of the larynx, which houses the vocal cords, due to viral infections, excessive use of the voice, or acid reflux. It manifests with hoarseness, a tickling sensation in the throat, and a dry cough. In our ENT clinic, rapid recovery is achieved with vocal rest, moist steam applications, and underlying cause-directed anti-inflammatory medical treatments.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is Laryngitis?

It is an acute or chronic inflammation characterized by edema and swelling of the larynx and vocal cords.

What Causes It?

Common cold viruses, shouting loudly, smoking, and stomach acid escaping into the throat (reflux) are the most common causes.

What are the Symptoms?

Hoarseness or complete loss of voice, dryness/burning in the throat, difficulty swallowing, and dry cough.

When is it Dangerous?

If hoarseness lasts longer than 2-3 weeks, becomes chronic, or is accompanied by shortness of breath, it should be examined with suspicion of laryngeal cancer.

How is it Diagnosed?

It is sufficient for an ENT specialist to examine the vocal cords with an endoscope (camera) and detect redness/edema.

How is it Treated?

It is treated with plenty of fluid consumption, complete vocal rest (even whispering is harmful), air humidifiers, and reflux/allergy medications.
