General Information About Lymphadenopathy
Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions
It is the enlargement of the lymph nodes generally over 1 centimeter in diameter while fighting diseases or due to cell accumulation.
The most common causes are tooth decays, throat infections, and the common cold. More rarely, lymphoma, leukemia, or metastatic cancers enlarge the lymph nodes.
Nodes due to infection are painful, soft, and movable. Those originating from cancer are usually painless, rock hard, immovable, and adherent.
In children, lymph nodes enlarge very frequently during tonsillitis. However, if it lasts longer than 2 weeks, exceeds 2 cm in diameter, and progressively grows, it should be investigated.
Following a physical examination by the physician, ultrasonography is performed to examine the internal structure, shape, and vascularization of the node.
Nodes that do not shrink despite antibiotic treatment and have suspicious ultrasound findings are removed under local anesthesia and sent for pathological examination (biopsy).
