Lichen Planus

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Lichen Planus

Lichen planus is an itchy and inflammatory autoimmune disease of unknown cause where the immune system attacks the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes (inside the mouth, genital area). It forms purplish, flat-topped, and itchy plaques on the skin. In our Dermatology clinic, it is diagnosed through clinical findings and skin biopsy, and treated with topical corticosteroids and phototherapy.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is Lichen Planus?

It is an allergic/autoimmune inflammation of the skin characterized by purple-red, itchy rashes on the skin and mucous membranes lasting for weeks.

Is it Contagious?

No. It is not an infection caused by a fungus or virus; it is related to the person's own immune system and does not spread to anyone.

What are the Symptoms?

Purple-colored, slightly elevated, highly itchy plaques on the wrists, ankles, and trunk; and painful, white, lace-like lines inside the mouth (on the inner cheeks).

What Can Trigger It?

The exact cause is unclear, but intense stress, Hepatitis C infection, and certain blood pressure and malaria medications can trigger the disease.

How is it Diagnosed?

The dermatologist observing the purple color of the lesions and the white lines called Wickham striae is sufficient for diagnosis. A biopsy is taken in uncertain cases.

How is the Treatment?

The disease generally resolves on its own within 1-2 years. Strong topical cortisone creams, antihistamines, immunosuppressants, or ultraviolet light (phototherapy) are applied to stop the itching and pain.
