It is a chronic inflammatory condition that generally affects the anogenital area, forming white patches where the skin loses its elasticity and thins out like cigarette paper.
Although it can occur at any age, it is especially more common in postmenopausal women. Rarely, it can also appear on the foreskin in men.
Unbearable itching in the genital area, skin that cracks and bleeds easily, a feeling of tearing/pain during sexual intercourse, and the tissues sticking together.
The disease itself is not cancer, but untreated and chronic sores and tissue damage slightly increase the risk of developing squamous cell skin cancer in that area (vulva).
During a physician's examination, a typical figure-eight (8) shaped whitening around the vulva is observed. For a definitive diagnosis, a small 3-millimeter skin biopsy (punch biopsy) is taken.
Strong topical cortisone ointments are used for months to repair the skin and suppress the disease. If skin adhesions impair sexual function, they can be surgically separated.
