Major Depression

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Major Depression

Major depression is a severe psychiatric illness characterized by a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest, deeply affecting an individual's mood, thoughts, and behaviors. It impairs functionality and can lead to suicidal thoughts. In our Psychiatry clinic, patients' quality of life is restored by combining pharmacological antidepressant treatments with cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy methods.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is Major Depression?

It is a clinical mood disorder accompanied by a persistent and severe feeling of sadness, making daily life impossible.

What is the Difference from Temporary Sadness?

Everyday sorrows are event-related and pass over time. Major depression, on the other hand, is an unprovoked despondency that continues every day and for most of the day for at least two weeks.

What are the Symptoms?

Persistent unhappiness, inability to enjoy things that used to bring pleasure (anhedonia), sleep/appetite disturbances, feelings of worthlessness, and loss of energy.

What Causes It?

The imbalance of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine in the brain, genetic predisposition, and severe traumatic/stressful life events are the biggest triggers.

How is it Diagnosed?

It is diagnosed through the clinical interview of a psychiatrist and the evaluation of DSM-5 diagnostic criteria; there is no blood test for diagnosis, but blood tests can be done to rule out organic causes.

How is it Treated?

A high rate of cure is achieved when antidepressant drugs that regulate brain chemistry and psychotherapy (CBT) that improves the patient's mindset are applied together.
