Breast Infection (Mastitis/Abscess)

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Breast Infection

Breast infection (Mastitis or Breast Abscess) is a localized inflammation caused by bacteria entering the breast tissue through skin cracks or milk ducts. It usually occurs in breastfeeding women as a result of milk accumulation (stasis), but can also develop in non-breastfeeding women (e.g., smokers). It presents with severe pain and an increase in temperature in the breast. In our General Surgery unit, it is treated with antibiotic therapy and, if necessary, ultrasound-guided abscess drainage.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is a Breast Infection?

It is the reddening, swelling, and pain caused by germs infecting the mammary glands or the tissues under the nipple.

Why Does It Occur in Non-Breastfeeding Women (Periductal Mastitis)?

Especially in women who have smoked for many years, it is the damage and blockage of the ducts right behind the nipple, developing an infection. It can cause nipple inversion and discharge.

What are the Symptoms?

A hard lump (swelling) in the breast that is very painful to the touch, localized redness, the breast feeling warm, swelling in the armpit lymph nodes, and a general flu-like fatigue/fever.

Can it be Confused with Cancer?

Yes. A rare and aggressive type of cancer called 'Inflammatory Breast Cancer' completely mimics a breast infection, making the breast red and swollen. Cancer must definitely be investigated in cases of redness that does not respond to antibiotics.

How is it Diagnosed?

Signs of inflammation are detected during a physical examination. However, a Breast Ultrasound is an absolute must to determine if a pus pocket (abscess) has formed inside or to rule out the suspicion of a mass.

How is the Treatment?

Early-stage infections heal completely with 10-14 days of antibiotic use, rest, and warm compresses. If the infection has turned into an abscess (accumulation of pus), it is mandatory to drain the inflammation with a syringe or a small incision under ultrasound guidance.
