Meniscus Tear

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Meniscus Tears

A meniscus tear refers to the tearing of the cartilaginous, C-shaped structures (menisci) in the knee joint that act as shock-absorbing cushions between the femur and tibia, resulting from sudden rotation, strain, or age-related degeneration. It leads to pain, locking, and swelling in the knee. In our Orthopedics and Traumatology clinic, it is staged using MRI and treated via physical therapy or arthroscopic (closed) surgical repair.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is a Meniscus?

These are cartilaginous tissues located in the internal and external parts of the knee joint that prevent the upper and lower bones from rubbing against each other, acting as 'shock absorbers' to distribute the load.

What are the Symptoms?

At the moment of the tear, a popping or clicking sound may be heard from the knee. Subsequently, swelling in the knee, a catching sensation while walking, inability to fully flex or extend the knee, and a sharp pain felt along the joint line begin.

Why Does the Knee Lock?

This happens when the torn meniscus piece (such as a bucket-handle tear) displaces and gets stuck between the bones that form the joint. In this situation, the patient cannot extend or flex the knee (it remains locked), which requires emergency surgical intervention.

How is it Diagnosed?

Rotation and flexion tests performed by an orthopedist heavily indicate a tear. A Knee MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is performed to clearly view the size, type, and location of the tear.

Does Every Tear Require Surgery?

No. Small tears on the outer edges can heal with physical therapy and rest, as they have a blood supply. However, large tears in the inner non-vascularized zone that cause locking of the knee are repaired with sutures or trimmed via Arthroscopy (closed surgery).
