Neuropathy

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Neuropathy

Neuropathy is a chronic nerve disorder characterized by sensations such as numbness, tingling, prickling, and electric shocks in the hands and feet, resulting from damage to the peripheral nervous system outside the brain and spinal cord.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can access detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is Neuropathy?

It is the condition where the electricity-conducting structures of the nerves (axon or myelin sheath) are damaged, sending false pain signals to the brain or, conversely, causing numbness.

What Causes It?

By far the primary cause is uncontrolled Diabetes (Diabetes Mellitus). Additionally, Vitamin B12 deficiency, chronic alcohol consumption, renal failure, and chemotherapy drugs can destroy the nerves.

What Are the Symptoms?

A loss of sensation resembling "wearing socks and gloves" begins in the hands and feet. Patients experience neuropathic pain, feeling as if a constant fire is burning under their feet, or suffering from sensations akin to razor cuts or crawling ants.

How is it Treated?

There is no medication that can completely revive a dead nerve. Initially, blood sugar levels are stabilized. Ordinary analgesics are ineffective for alleviating unbearable neuropathic pain (burning/stabbing); instead, specific neuromodulating medications (such as Gabapentin) are utilized.
