Autism

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects brain development, impairing an individual's social communication and interaction skills, and leading to restricted/repetitive behaviors. Symptoms are generally noticed during the first three years of life. In our Child Psychiatry and Special Education units, the child's independent living skills are developed through early intervention and individualized education programs.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can access detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is Autism (Spectrum Disorder)?

It is an innate, lifelong, and complex difference in brain development that affects how an individual perceives the world, communicates, and socializes with others.

Why is it Called a 'Spectrum'?

Because autism is not a single uniform condition. Some autistic individuals cannot speak and require heavy support, while others (formerly diagnosed with Asperger's) can be highly intelligent, gifted, and only mildly socially awkward. The symptoms present across a wide range (spectrum).

What Are the Early Signs in Infancy?

Lack of eye contact, not turning to look when their name is called, failing to point to what they want with their index finger, not playing with peers, spinning in circles, or hand-flapping are the earliest warning signs.

Is It the Same as Intellectual Disability?

No. Autism is a communication disorder, not an intellectual one. Although intellectual disability may accompany autism in some individuals, many autistic people have normal or well above normal intelligence capacities (e.g., incredible mathematical or musical talents).

What Causes It (Do Vaccines Cause It)?

The claim that childhood vaccines cause autism is a massive lie that has been completely debunked medically. While the exact cause is unknown, a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors during brain development in the womb plays a role.

How is it Treated (Educated)?

There is no pill or surgery that cures autism. The largest, most valid, and sole treatment is Early, Intensive, and Continuous Special Education. The earlier (2-3 years old) the right education begins, the better the brain (thanks to neuroplasticity) learns the missing social skills and engages with life.
