It is a disease where the immune system creates severe inflammation in the joint membranes as if fighting germs, and over time, this inflammation melts the cartilage and bone that make up the joint, leaving the patient disabled.
Osteoarthritis is age- and wear-related; it hurts with movement. Rheumatoid Arthritis, on the other hand, causes severe pain during rest (especially in the mornings). While osteoarthritis usually affects a single knee or hip, RA symmetrically affects both sides of the body (e.g., the right and left wrists swell simultaneously).
Its most classic symptom is Morning Stiffness lasting more than 1 hour (inability to make a fist). Red, hot, and spongy swellings form in the small joints (especially the middle and root knuckles of the fingers). Because it is a systemic disease that can affect not only the joints but also the lungs, heart, and eyes, chronic fatigue and mild fever are frequently seen.
It is seen 3 times more often in women than in men and usually begins between the ages of 30-50. It is known that the disease is triggered when environmental factors like smoking, stress, or gum infections are added to a genetic predisposition (HLA-DR4 gene). Smoking is the external factor that exacerbates this disease the most.
The first step is a rheumatologist examining the symmetrical swelling in the joints. Blood inflammation markers (CRP, Sedimentation) are checked. However, high positivity of Rheumatoid Factor (RF) and Anti-CCP antibodies in the blood largely confirms the disease for a definitive diagnosis. X-rays of the hands/feet and Ultrasound/MRI are used to assess the damage.
There is no cure that completely resets rheumatoid arthritis, but Remission (completely suppressing/stopping the disease) is possible. The earlier the treatment is started (within the first 6 months), the more joint erosion is prevented.
Ordinary painkillers do not stop the disease. Using Disease-Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs (Methotrexate, etc.) and new generation high-tech Biological Drugs (Smart Injections/Serums) that correct the immune system, patients can continue their lives completely normally, pain-free, and without the risk of disability.
