Toxoplasmosis

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Toxoplasmosis

Toxoplasmosis is a prevalent infectious disease caused by the obligate intracellular protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii, most frequently transmitted via contact with feline feces or the ingestion of undercooked contaminated meat. While immunocompetent individuals generally experience mild, self-limiting flu-like symptoms; primary maternal infection during pregnancy poses significant teratogenic risks, potentially resulting in spontaneous abortion or severe congenital malformations. In our Infectious Diseases and Obstetrics & Gynecology clinics, it is screened utilizing specific serological (antibody) assays and managed with targeted antimicrobial protocols when clinically indicated.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can access detailed information about the disease under the headings below.

It is an infectious disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii, a microscopic parasite that infiltrates the human body and proliferates intracellularly.

Felines serve as the definitive host for this parasite. Human transmission primarily occurs through the ingestion of unwashed vegetables contaminated with infected cat feces or, representing the most common transmission vector, the consumption of raw or undercooked infected meat (such as raw meatballs, raw sausages, salami).

A healthy individual typically remains asymptomatic upon parasitic exposure. However, if a woman contracts this parasite for the FIRST TIME during pregnancy, the pathogen can cross the placenta and infect the fetus. This congenital infection can precipitate fetal blindness, profound neurological sequelae (hydrocephalus), intellectual disability, or spontaneous abortions (stillbirths).

Approximately 90% of cases are entirely asymptomatic. When clinically manifest, it presents a mild coryzal picture resembling a common cold, characterized by myalgia, cervical lymphadenopathy, and low-grade fever. Conversely, in immunocompromised cohorts (e.g., oncology patients, HIV/AIDS), it can progress to severe toxoplasmic encephalitis.

Diagnostic confirmation is achieved via serological evaluation of Toxoplasma-specific antibodies (IgM and IgG) in the serum, differentiating between an acute concurrent infection and conferring an assessment of past exposure and resultant immunity.

Pregnant women must strictly avoid cleaning feline litter boxes, ensure all meat is thoroughly cooked prior to consumption, and meticulously wash vegetables in vinegar-treated water. Upon detection of an active acute infection during gestation, specialized antimicrobial chemotherapy (e.g., Spiramycin) is immediately initiated to inhibit vertical transplacental parasitic transmission to the fetus.
