Mythomania (Pathological Lying)

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Mythomania

Mythomania (Pseudologia Fantastica) is a psychiatric disorder where a person feels an impulsive need to constantly lie without any motive for financial gain or escape. In our Psychiatry departments, underlying traumas are identified, and the condition is treated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can access detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is Mythomania (Pathological Lying)?

It is the condition where an individual chronically and extraordinarily fabricates lies purely out of an internal impulse, without expecting any external benefit (such as money, status, or avoiding punishment).

How Does It Differ From Normal Lying?

An ordinary lie is told to gain an advantage or to hide a mistake. In mythomanic lies, there is no logic or self-interest. The patient simply makes up incredible stories to attract attention and appear as a hero/victim.

Does the Person Believe Their Own Lies?

Yes, this is the most dramatic aspect of the disease. Although they may initially be aware that it is a lie, over time, the brain becomes unable to distinguish fact from fiction, and the person convinces themselves of the fantastic stories they have fabricated.

What Causes It?

It often accompanies personality disorders such as Narcissistic or Borderline Personality Disorder. Emotional neglect experienced in childhood, severe traumas, and extremely low self-esteem cause the brain to produce lies as a 'defense mechanism'.

How is it Diagnosed?

The diagnosis is made through a psychiatric evaluation based on a detailed clinical interview by a psychiatrist and information obtained from the patient's close circle (regarding recurrent fictional lies).

How is it Treated?

Patients generally do not admit that they are ill (they avoid confronting it). Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) conducted with a psychologist who can establish a relationship of trust is the primary solution. If there is underlying depression or anxiety, medical treatment supports the process.
