Adenoma

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Adenoma

Adenomas are generally slow-growing, benign tumors originating from the epithelial cells that make up the glandular tissues in the body. They are most commonly seen as polyps in the thyroid, pituitary gland, adrenal glands, and intestines. They mostly do not turn into cancer, but they can disrupt the hormone balance in the region where they are located.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the condition under the headings below.
They are benign (non-cancerous) masses formed as a result of the uncontrolled proliferation of secretory glands (hormone-producing tissues) or the cells lining the inner surface of the intestines/stomach.
In the vast majority of cases, it is completely benign and does not metastasize (spread). However, especially adenomatous polyps in the large intestine (colon) carry the potential to transform into colon cancer by undergoing cellular changes over the years.
The mass usually does not present symptoms when small. However, hormone-producing types, such as pituitary or thyroid adenomas, secrete excessive hormones into the blood, causing systemic hormonal complaints like hyperthyroidism or acromegaly.
It is detected via Ultrasound, MRI, or Endoscopy/Colonoscopy. Adenomas that secrete hormones or carry a risk of cancerization are treated by complete excision using surgical or endoscopic methods. Those that do not cause problems are only followed up regularly.
