Sixth Disease (Roseola)

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Sixth Disease

Sixth disease (Roseola Infantum) is a viral infection with a rash caused by Human Herpes Virus 6 (HHV-6), generally seen in infants between 6 months and 2 years of age. It is characterized by a sudden and high fever lasting a few days, followed by pink-red rashes starting on the trunk as the fever breaks. It is mostly harmless and heals on its own.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the condition under the headings below.
What is Sixth Disease?

It is a common and usually mild viral infection mostly encountered in infancy, characterized by a sudden high fever followed by rashes appearing on the skin.

How is it Transmitted?

It is transmitted through the respiratory droplets (coughs, sneezes) or saliva of adult carriers or other children, usually before the symptoms of the disease fully appear.

What are the Symptoms?

The disease starts with a stubborn fever reaching 39-40 degrees. The fever drops suddenly after 3-4 days, and right at that moment, non-itchy pink rashes spread from the trunk to the arms and neck.

Is There a Risk of Seizure (Febrile Convulsion)?

Because the fever rises very suddenly and rapidly, benign febrile convulsions may be seen in some babies. This condition usually leaves no permanent damage.

How is it Diagnosed?

A specific laboratory test is generally not needed. The classic course of the disease (a rash starting at the end of a high fever) is sufficient for the physician to make a diagnosis through a physical examination.

How is it Treated?

Antibiotic treatment is not applied. Full recovery is achieved within a few days with age-appropriate fever-reducing syrups to keep the fever under control, plenty of fluids, and rest.
