It is a highly contagious bacterial disease that is sexually transmitted and infects the urinary tract, cervix, rectum, or throat.
A severe burning sensation when urinating (like a razor cut), a yellow, green, or white purulent discharge from the penis, and sometimes pain/swelling in the testicles.
Symptoms in women can be more insidious. It is frequently seen as a burning sensation during urination, abnormal vaginal discharge, bleeding outside of the menstrual period, lower abdominal, and pelvic pain.
The bacteria travel upward and damage the reproductive organs. It can cause blockages in the sperm ducts in men, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and permanent infertility in women.
A definitive diagnosis is made by detecting the gonorrhea bacteria through a urinalysis and laboratory culture or PCR test of the discharge sample taken from the penis/vagina.
Since it is a bacterial disease, it is treated 100% with antibiotics (usually a combination of a single-dose injection and pills). To prevent the infection from recurring, it is mandatory that the spouse or sexual partner is treated simultaneously.
