Brain Hemorrhage

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Brain Hemorrhage

Brain hemorrhage is the leaking of blood into the brain tissue or between the membranes surrounding the brain as a result of a ruptured blood vessel. High blood pressure, aneurysms, or head traumas are the most common causes. It is a fatal emergency presenting with loss of consciousness developing within seconds, paralysis, and severe headache. In our Neurosurgery clinic, procedures to drain the blood and repair the blood vessel surgically are rapidly performed.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is a Brain Hemorrhage?

It is the crushing of brain cells and depriving the area of oxygen by blood leaking from one of the arteries or veins inside the skull tearing due to weakening or trauma.

Why Does It Occur?

Uncontrolled and suddenly rising hypertension, ballooning in brain vessels (aneurysms), vascular tangles (AVM), misuse of blood thinners, and severe blows to the head are the main causes.

What Are the Symptoms?

Sudden headache, described by the person as the 'worst pain I've ever experienced in my life', projectile vomiting, speech impairment, momentary paralysis on one side of the body, and loss of consciousness.

Who is at Risk?

Chronic blood pressure patients, individuals of advanced age, heavy smokers and alcohol consumers, and those with a family history of brain hemorrhage/aneurysm are in the high-risk group.

How is it Diagnosed?

With a Computerized Tomography (CT) of the brain taken in a patient brought to the emergency room, the location, type, and volume of the bleeding are clearly determined within seconds.

How is it Treated?

In small hemorrhages, blood pressure is lowered with medications, and brain edema is controlled. If the bleeding is large and pressing on brain tissue, the skull is urgently opened to drain the blood (craniotomy), or the torn vessel is repaired via angiography.
