Bursitis

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Bursitis

Bursitis is the irritation, inflammation, and swelling of the fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that act as shock absorbers, preventing bones, tendons, and muscles from rubbing against each other around the joints.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is Bursitis?

It is the non-infectious edema and distension of the lubricating fluid sacs (bursae) around the joint. When you move the joint, this swollen sac is compressed, causing severe pain.

In Which Joints Is It Most Common?

It occurs very frequently in the shoulder (pain when raising the arm), elbow (student's elbow), in front of the kneecap (housemaid's knee), and the hip joint.

Why Does It Occur?

Continuous and repetitive use of the same joint (painting, playing tennis), working while kneeling or leaning on the elbows for long periods, or a sudden blow to the joint are the main causes that trigger bursitis.

How is it Diagnosed?

During a physical examination by an Orthopedics or Physical Therapy specialist, redness, localized warmth, and a soft swelling tender to the touch are noted in the joint. X-rays are taken to rule out bone damage, and Ultrasound is used to visualize the fluid in the bursa.

How is it Treated?

The fundamental treatment is resting the joint. Ice applications, tight bandages, and anti-inflammatory pills are given to reduce the swelling. If the sac is severely swollen, the doctor aspirates the excess fluid with a syringe and injects cortisone into the bursa using the same needle to instantly dry up the inflammation.
