Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About TMJ Disorders

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders refer to the dysfunction of the joint connecting the lower jaw to the skull and the surrounding muscles. It occurs due to teeth clenching (bruxism), trauma, or calcification. It manifests with pain during chewing and a clicking sound from the joint. In our Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics departments, it is managed with night guards and joint treatments.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can find detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder?

It is the loss of function and experiencing painful contractions of the chewing muscles and the joint that acts as a hinge between the lower jawbone and the skull.

Why Does It Occur?

The most common cause is unconsciously clenching and grinding teeth during sleep (bruxism). Additionally, blows to the jaw, rheumatic diseases, and incorrect dental bite also disrupt the joint.

What Are the Symptoms?

Restricted jaw movements, pain felt in front of the ear when chewing or yawning, a clicking sound from the joint, and muscle pains spreading to the head/neck region.

Does Locking (Mouth Remaining Open) Occur?

Yes, in advanced joint dysfunctions, the jaw disc can slip out of place, causing the mouth to be unable to open fully or suddenly locking and remaining open.

How is it Diagnosed?

A clinical examination by a dentist or maxillofacial surgeon is essential. Panoramic X-rays and Jaw MRI imaging are used to see the internal structure of the joint, disc, and bone deformations.

How is it Treated?

Most patients recover with medical treatments, muscle relaxants, and special (occlusal) night guards that protect the teeth. In advanced joint damages, arthrocentesis (washing the inside of the joint) or open joint surgery may be required.
