Prediabetes (Borderline Diabetes)

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Prediabetes

Prediabetes is the intermediate transition period where fasting blood sugar is higher than normal but has not yet risen enough to warrant a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. It may sometimes present no symptoms but is a strong warning for heart diseases and future diabetes. In our Internal Medicine and Nutrition departments, progression to diabetes is prevented through medical nutrition therapy, weight management, and exercise programs.

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can access detailed information about the disease under the headings below.
What is Prediabetes (Borderline Diabetes)?

It is the stage where blood sugar levels are above normal due to the cells showing resistance to insulin, but have not yet risen high enough to receive a full diagnosis of diabetes.

What Should Blood Sugar Levels Be?

A fasting blood sugar between 100-125 mg/dL or an HbA1c (3-month blood sugar average) value between 5.7% and 6.4% is medically considered Prediabetes.

Who is at Risk for Prediabetes?

Overweight (obese) individuals, those with a family history of diabetes, people with a wide waist circumference (abdominal fat), women who have had gestational diabetes, and those leading a sedentary lifestyle are in the risk group.

Are There Any Physical Symptoms?

Sometimes it progresses silently and is not noticed without a blood test. Sometimes it can cause extreme sleepiness after meals, darkening of the skin on the neck/armpits (Acanthosis nigricans), or sudden sugar cravings.

Is It Certain to Turn Into Diabetes?

No. Prediabetes is an 'alarm' state. If precautions are not taken, the vast majority of patients will develop Type 2 Diabetes in the future. However, if intervened, the process can be completely halted.

How is it Reversed (Treated)?

Drug-free treatment is possible. Losing 5% to 10% of body weight, cutting out the consumption of refined carbohydrates and sugar, and doing moderate-paced walking for 150 minutes a week can be effective in returning blood sugar to normal.
