Undescended Testicle

Diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment methods.

General Information About Undescended Testicle

Undescended testicle (Cryptorchidism) is a condition in male infants where one or both testicles fail to descend into the scrotum during fetal development, remaining in the abdomen or inguinal canal. It carries a risk of infertility and testicular cancer. In our Urology department, potential complications are prevented by a timely orchiopexy (surgical descent of the testicle).

Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions

You can access detailed information about the disease under the headings below.

It is a condition where the testicles of male infants fail to complete their journey down into the scrotum after completing their development, remaining suspended in the inguinal canal or abdominal cavity.

It is very common in premature babies because the descent process is incomplete. Additionally, hormonal deficiencies and anatomical barriers can stop the descent of the testicle.

In order for the testicles to produce sperm, they must be in the scrotum, which is cooler than body temperature. A testicle remaining in the abdomen permanently loses its ability to produce sperm due to the high temperature.

Yes. The likelihood of undescended testicles developing into testicular cancer in later years is much higher than normal. Therefore, early intervention and regular follow-up thereafter are of vital importance.

The empty scrotum is detected through a physical examination by a neonatologist or pediatric surgeon. Ultrasound or MRI is used to locate testicles that remain inside the abdomen.

The possibility of spontaneous descent is expected until the 6th month. If it has not descended, by 1 year of age at the latest, the testicle is retrieved from its location, brought down into the scrotum, and fixed with surgical intervention (Orchiopexy).
