General Information About Colon Cancer
Disease Details and Frequently Asked Questions
It is the formation of malignant tumors by healthy cells in the inner lining of the large intestine, the last part of the digestive system, proliferating uncontrollably, usually as a result of genetic mutations.
Almost all colon cancers originate from harmless fleshy moles called 'Polyps' that form in the intestine years ago. These polyps grow insidiously over 5-10 years and turn into cancer. Cutting and removing these polyps with colonoscopy before they become cancerous prevents the disease 100%.
The disease progresses insidiously in the early stages. When it grows, it causes red or black blood in the stool, constant alternating between diarrhea and constipation (change in bowel habits), pencil-thin stools, and a feeling of 'incomplete emptying' after going to the toilet.
The gold standard diagnostic tool is the Colonoscopy procedure. The entire intestine is examined with a flexible tube with a camera at its end, and a biopsy (piece) is instantly taken from suspicious masses. The Fecal Occult Blood test is also an important screening tool.
The treatment for early-stage colon cancer is Surgery; the cancerous bowel section and surrounding lymph nodes are excised and removed using a closed (Laparoscopic) method, and the intestine is sutured end-to-end. For most patients, there is NO NEED to connect the intestine to the outside (to a bag/stoma). Complete healing is achieved by applying protective Chemotherapy or Smart Drugs depending on the post-operative stage.
