What is Fish Poisoning? Symptoms of Fish Poisoning

About the Article

Fish poisoning (specifically Scombroid / Histamine poisoning) is a severe allergic reaction or toxic poisoning state of the body against the substance "histamine" secreted by bacteria rapidly multiplying inside consumed seafood that is kept without adhering to proper cold chain rules. No matter how fresh the fish looks, if it is kept under the wrong conditions, it can turn into a ticking time bomb.

The Danger Hidden in Seafood

Myths, real causes, and emergency symptoms of fish poisoning.
Is the myth "Eating milk/yogurt and fish together poisons you" true?

This is definitely a myth. If the fish is "completely fresh," consuming milk, ayran, or yogurt with it does not lead to any poisoning. However, if the fish is stale, when the histamine protein in the fish combines with the lactic acid in the yogurt, the poisoning picture or allergic reaction becomes much more severe. The culprit is not the yogurt, but the stale fish.

When do poisoning symptoms start and what are they?

Fish poisoning (especially histamine reaction) is very rapid; it starts suddenly 10 minutes to 2 hours after eating the fish. Severe redness on the face and neck, hot flashes (flushing), tingling around the mouth, severe headache, palpitations, stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea are the most typical symptoms. It almost mimics a severe allergy attack.

How is it treated, is it necessary to go to the emergency room?

Although it may seem like a simple upset stomach, histamine poisoning has the potential to block breathing by causing edema in the windpipe. When these symptoms are seen, the patient should try to vomit to empty the stomach and go to the emergency room without wasting any time. In treatment, strong "antihistamine" serums and normal saline fluid support yield instant results.
