Limb Lengthening Surgery

About the Treatment Method

Limb lengthening surgery is the process of surgically cutting the long bones in the legs (thigh or shin bone) and lengthening the bone at a rate of 1 millimeter per day utilizing the body's natural healing mechanism by using special external fixators or intramedullary (intra-bone) magnetic nails. It is performed by orthopedics specialists for dwarfism (achondroplasia), leg length discrepancies, or purely cosmetic (aesthetic) reasons.

Lengthening Process and Surgical Methods

Techniques of bone lengthening surgery and the arduous rehabilitation process.
How is the bone lengthened?

During surgery, the bone is carefully cut. The system placed between the two cut ends (for example, the Precice magnetic nail) is opened 1 millimeter every day with an externally controlled remote. The body fills this gap with new bone tissue, fusing it. The bone continues to lengthen until the targeted height is reached.

What is the maximum lengthening that can be achieved?

The safe lengthening limit from a single bone segment (for example, only the lower leg or only the upper leg) is generally between 5 and 8 centimeters, depending on the stretching tolerance of nerves and muscles. If both the lower and upper legs are lengthened, 12-15 cm can be gained.

Is the postoperative process difficult?

Yes, this is a long-term treatment requiring patience. During the lengthening process (for example, 60 days for 6 cm) and afterwards, the hardening of the bone (consolidation) takes months. During this process, it is mandatory to receive intensive physical therapy and strictly follow the doctor's permissions for walking (weight-bearing).
